Sometimes we run out of prayers. We don’t know what to pray. We’re drained. The people of God have been praying since day 1. They’ve written down some of the prayers for our benefit. I was taught that prayers should be spontaneous for fear my prayers should become rote. Honestly, I have found that the opposite is true. When I pay attention to my own spontaneous prayers, I find them to be often the same. The Psalms are the prayers of others that Jesus prayed. Thank God we have them. Thank God Jesus modeled how to pray the prayers of others!

My family lived in Montreal, Canada, where we were missionaries. A family we ministered was getting rid of some books. They gave us a small box. Amongst the books was this gem. Originally written in 1949 by John Baillie. It is a classic.

Recently, the English of the period has been updated to the English of our period. It’s been a companion for over 20 years. Never tired of it. A present help in times of need.

Ennjoy!
